The next morning Freddie took one last deep drag on his cigarette and flicked it away. He’d barely slept, both Anna’s nightmares and his fury and frustration at Joe’s threats keeping him up. Life was getting very dark on all fronts.

Reaching the front door of the greasy caff, he opened it and made a beeline for Sammy and Paul, who were already there waiting. Mentally he filed the stress of the Mafia and Anna away to worry about later. Right now, he had other problems that needed addressing. Paul signalled to the waitress behind the counter and she came over as Freddie sat down.

‘What can I get you?’ she asked, pulling the little notebook out of her apron pocket.

‘Three teas, love,’ Paul replied. He frowned. Dark circles ringed Freddie’s eyes and he seemed irate.

‘Coming up.’ She bustled off to get their order.

‘So, what’s up?’ Sammy asked once they were alone.

Freddie’s expression was grim. ‘I think we might have a leak. The raid on the shipment, that was unexpected, and Damien seems to think they knew exactly where to look.’

‘That could have just been luck,’ Sammy offered.

‘Which is what I initially thought too,’ Freddie replied. ‘But yesterday our cocaine supplier was raided. Armed response, the lot. There had been no signs, nothing out of the ordinary.’ Freddie pulled a face. ‘A bit coincidental don’t you think?’

‘How would they have got that information though? It’s not like we give out the details to many people, and none of ours would nark,’ Paul said, shifting his weight in his chair.

‘That’s what I can’t work out. But both of our biggest supply chains hit in such a short space of time? It’s too precise to be an accident.’ He sat back in his chair.

They were silent for a few minutes, each lost in their own thoughts. The waitress came back with their teas.

‘Here you go, guys. Let me know if you need anything else.’

‘Thanks,’ Paul muttered absently. ‘What do you want to do then, Fred? Got any ideas?’

‘At this point the only thing we can do…’ Freddie paused, loathe to continue. He trusted his men; they had more than earned it over the years. To start testing that trust again now went against the grain, but it was the only logical move to make. ‘I don’t like it one bit, but I think the first thing we need to do is pull everyone from the inner circle together, everyone in the know, and lay a trap. A test.’

Paul made a sound of dislike and shook his head, and Sammy pursed his lips with a frown.

‘I don’t like it either, but have you got any better ideas?’ Freddie glanced from one to the other. ‘The three of us grew up together from kids. The only thing I’m sure of right now is that it ain’t going to be one of us.’

‘Well, who could it be then, Fred? Bill? Dean?’ Paul exclaimed. ‘Come on, all our guys are loyal to the bone – you know that.’

‘I do know that.
